Go to a Fish Fry

Barbados boasts vibrant Fish Frys that are not only a culinary delight but also a cultural experience. Oistins Fish Fry is perhaps the most renowned, located in the fishing village of Oistins on the South Coast.

Open every Friday night, Oistins transforms into a lively hub where locals and tourists converge to enjoy freshly grilled seafood, particularly the catch of the day, accompanied by Bajan side dishes and flavorful sauces. (Don’t skip the Bajan hot sauce!)

The atmosphere is electric with live music, dancing, and a communal spirit that makes it a must-visit spot for a true taste of Barbadian culture.

Another notable Fish Fry is the Fisherman's Pub in Speightstown, where authenticity reigns supreme. Open on weekends, this lesser-known gem offers an intimate setting, allowing patrons to relish in the simplicity of the island's seafood while engaging in friendly conversations with locals.

Fish Frys are not just about the delicious food, but also in the genuine warmth of the Barbadian hospitality.

Visit the Barbados Wildlife Reserve

The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is a sanctuary for both native and exotic animals that gives families a unique opportunity to observe and interact with wildlife in a semi-natural environment. The Wildlife Reserve has two troops of wild green monkeys wondering the property, tortoises roaming free, a massive iguana who likes to escape and walk along the paths, beautiful roaming peacocks, and more.

the massive iguana escaped his enclosure to roam the property. don’t worry, he goes abck in on his own

Located in the northern part of the island, this reserve spans four acres of lush tropical forest. One of the main attractions is the Green Monkey, Barbados' playful and mischievous primate, which roams freely within the reserve. They have feeding times twice a day where you can get up close with the wild monkeys.

hanging out on the catamaran between snorkeling with sea turtles and snorkeling a shipwreck!

Spend the Day on a Catamaran

One of the best things to do in Barbados is taking a catamaran out for the afternoon or taking a sunset cruise. We have done the lunch time catamaran and it was amazing. So amazing that we have booked an entire private charter for our next trip.

Which Catamaran is the best in Barbados? That will depend on your budget and what time of day you like to go.

when you book a catamaran cruise, snorkel gear is included!

Lunch cruises typically are the best deal with a 5 hour cruise, unlimited drinks, a full meal, snorkeling with sea turtles and snorkeling a ship wreck. The dinner cruises include a buffet dinner, unlimited drinks, snorkeling, but are only 3-4 hours long.

NOTE: Children (4-12) are typically 50% the price of adults. Children under 4 are usually free.

Check out my Instagram Reel showing our Catamaran Cruise experience.

Explore the Beaches

No Barbados holiday would be complete without time on the beaches. Luckily, Barbados boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the Caribbean. Whether you are looking for calm, shallow waters or thrilling waves for water sports enthusiasts, Barbados has it all.

Hanging out on the beach is the best free things to do in Barbados. You already paid so much to get here, enjoy your time and save some coin!

Here are a few of my favorite beaches:

mullins beach is a great spot for snorkleing

Carlisle Bay Beach: We spend a lot of time in Carlisle Bay. Carlisle Bay offers calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. If you visit Carlisle Bay, be sure to get a fish cutter from Cuz’! It is in Carlisle Bay that you can swim with sea turtles or explore ship wrecks. You can also learn to sail, paddle board, and on occasion, there are waves big enough to surf.

Accra Beach: Accra Beach is located on the South Coast. This beach is a vibrant and lively beach known for its soft white sands and clear, turquoise waters. The beach is located near several food options such as Chefette, The Dutchie, The Tiki Bar (so good!), and if you’re looking for something a bit fancier, check out Champers. This beach is also a short walk to Starbucks if you’re needing a caffeine fix.

a full rainbow over carlisle bay

Mullins Beach: Mullins Beach, located on the North West coast, is a lively and popular destination known for its powdery sands and gentle waves. The beach attracts a mix of locals and tourists, creating a vibrant atmosphere with various water sports and beachside activities. There are amazing restaurants near by such as Sea Shed and CiCi’s Beach Bar.

Bottom Bay: Nestled between towering sea cliffs, Bottom Bay is a secluded gem with golden sands and swaying coconut palms. The natural beauty and tranquility make it a perfect escape for those seeking a quieter beach experience. You won’t always be able to swim on this beach, but its an great spot to relax.

Take a Sailing Class

the kids getting read to sail

One of the best things to do in Barabdos is sailing. You can take sailing classes with Set Sail Barbados at Carlisle Bay. They are located at the Barbados Cruising Club and offer single say sailing classes for adults and children! My kids started sailing with them at ages 5 and 7, but they have larger boats for adults to learn too. The sailing instructors are extremely professional and work well with children. If you book a class with Set Sail Barbados (Dominic), tell them Tavia sent you!

swimming in the natural sea pools along bathsheba

Explore the East Coast, Bathsheba

Bathsheba, Barbados is located on the less popular East Coast. The East Coast, or Green Coast, is one of the best hidden gems in Barbados. Bathsheba is one of the best things to do on your Barbados holiday.

We absolutely love going to the East Coast to swim in the natural sea pools, climb through the open rock caves, search for sea shells, and just enjoy the diversity of the rocky coast. This coast is not safe for swimming in the ocean, but pools are crystal clear and calm. They are absolutely perfect for swimming and safe! This is one of the best free things to do in Barbados.

Pro Tip: ONLY go when it’s low tide or you will not be able to walk among the coral rocks or swim in the natural sea pools.

Visit the Barbados Museum

the children’s area is newly renovate and it has air conditioning! my kids loved this spot! learn about everything from gravity to the human body to building your own chattel house

For a dose of culture and history, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society is an excellent destination. Kids can learn about the island's heritage, from its colonial past to its modern-day culture. The museum often hosts interactive exhibitions and workshops, making history come alive for young visitors. The museum has recently renovated their children’s area. It has several exhibits and is air conditioned. There is no children’s museum in Barbados, so this is the closet thing! The Barbados Museum is a great rainy day activity in Barbados.

Pro Tip: The actual museum gets very hot as there is no air conditioning! Bring a hand held fan to keep cool!

Visit the George Washington House

George washington house - bridgetown, barbados

George Washington House is a historic treasure that provides a unique glimpse into the life of America's first president, George Washington. This stately residence was once home to a young George Washington during his only visit to Barbados in 1751. This was the only time George Washington ever left the United States.

The house has been meticulously restored to its 18th-century splendor, allowing visitors, including families with children, to explore the rooms and learn about the significant impact this visit had on Washington's life and career.

The knowledgeable guides offer fascinating insights into the history of the house and its ties to the young Washington, making it a compelling and educational experience for all ages. It’s such a great thing to do in Barbados with kids.
