Where to Stay in Old San Juan
We stayed in a really great hotel in Old San Juan called Hotel Rumbao and it’s by Marriott. This hotel was walkable to everything, had on-site restaurants, a Walgreens below, and great service! It was only 15 minutes by Uber from the airport and they have Valet parking if you drive yourself (which I recommend).
we had a double queen room at hotel rumbao. they even allowed us check in at 10:15 AM. It was perfect for our family.
We stayed in a room at Hotel Rumbao with 2 queen beds. It had a huge bathroom and plenty of storage. We are a family of 5, but since our 2 year old was with us, we counted as 4. We had plenty of room for a packnplay with a Slumberpod. The room also had great FREE wifi.
We originally booked an Airbnb in San Juan and it fell through when we arrived and it left us scrambling to find a hotel. We used Chase points to book Hotel Rumbao!
If you have a family size of 5 or more and are looking for where to stay in Puerto Rico with a large family, consider the Caribe Hilton which has multiple room options for bigger families. Another option is Ciqala Luxury Apartments. This is close to Old San Juan, but would require an uber or a quick drive over to Castillo San Cristobal - maybe 5-7 minutes driving.
Use the map below to find the best place to stay in Old San Juan that fits your group size and budget.
Where to Stay in Aguadilla
We stayed in an Airbnb in Aguadilla. I loved it - it was the most well thought out stays we’ve had. A super responsive host and everything we needed. You can find the Airbnb HERE. Please tell Alison I sent you!
the airbnb is along the aguadilla beach boardwalk, so you can walk to dinner and watch the sunset!
I loved this 2-bedroom Airbnb. The unit had a full kitchen with anything you’d need to cook. There was a nice coffee machine with coffee waiting, ice packs for the cooler, water filter, a bowl of snacks waiting for us, beach towels, snorkels and goggles, 2 cooler options, fans, ear plugs, and more. The host even had extra toothbrushes, razors, and other toiletry items in case you forgot yours! It was a really nice stay.
Our airbnb was just to the left of that green sun dot by the boardwalk. It was a fantastic location!
If you’re a family of 5 or more, check out the Courtyard Marriott Aguadilla. It has a small water park, but also offers 2 bedroom suites at a reasonable price. There is one king bed and 2 queens in the other bedroom. It’s a perfect place to stay for families on Puerto Rico’s west coast.

However, there are so many places and towns to stay in on Puerto Rico’s West Coast - so before you decide, take a look around at the map to find a hotel or rental that meets your group’s size and budget.
the only thing we had eyes for after our drive to rio grande was food and the pool
Where to Stay in Rio Grande & Luquillo
We spent 3 nights at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Beach & Golf Resort. I highly highly recommend it. If you use THIS LINK you will get 10% off your next stay.
We stayed in the well thought out and newly renovated Family Suite (Discovery Suite) where we had:
King Bed & Bunk Beds in a bedroom with a door
Huge living room with couch and giant TV
A double balcony (meaning its the size balcony that two rooms would use)
So much storage - two giant closets, a dresser, side tables with drawers, a desk, and even a storage unit under the TV
Large bathroom that included a safety shower nozzle so little hands can't crank up the heat
And, maybe my fave part, a Nespresso Machine (and a mini fridge with a cabinet for food storage)
the newly renovated family suite (Discovery suite) was amazing with a bunk bed nook for kids
The Wyndham knocked it out of the park with newly renovated pool areas including an amazing splash pool for kids. They have daily activities like hair braiding, iguana feeding, cornhole, s'mores by a fire in the evenings, giant Candy Land game, bracelet making, UNO card games, soccer, and more (if you can believe there is more!)
For children 5-12, they have a new X'plorers program where kids go with an environmental interpreter to explore nature! You'll drop the kids off to explore the on-site rainforest, spot migratory birds, bike through thriving ecosystems, and visit the vital nesting grounds of ancient leatherback sea turtles. My kids loved this. They got to hold crabs and lizards and use magnets to find minerals in the sand. It was such a unique experience.
Xplorers club is included with your stay
The food was excellent. We have stayed at resorts all over the world and I usually don't praise the food. But here, every meal we had was genuinely so good! From a massive breakfast buffet that had traditional Puerto Rican food to a fine dining Italian restaurant. There are NINE dining options on the property, so whether you want grab and go food or a full sit down meal or use the 24-hour room service - you're going to get a great meal.
the food was top tier
So - a long dote on the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf and Beach Resort, but I highly recommend it for your next stay in Puerto Rico. It's only 35 minutes from the San Juan airport and a very short drive to El Yunque National Forest. It's a prime location on the island.

**The Wyndham did host us, but my opinions are honest and my own. I absolutely would NOT recommend anything I didn’t love and trust.
the wyndham also has a huge newly renovate pool area with a splash area for families and they have aura which is an adults only pool and bar
For families of 8 (or 7, 6, 5) - check out Las Casitas Village at El Conquistador! They have 3 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and 1 bedroom villas to meet any family size. El Conquistador has a lazy river and waterpark, several pools, and 10 on-site dining options. Another option is the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve which offers a Deluxe Villa that can sleep up to 6 people in one room! The Hyatt offers an airport shuttle, 3 pools, onsite dining options, a playground, and cribs!
we had chocolate milk shakes, frozen lemonades, pizza, and did a lot of playing
If you’d like other options in the area, check the map below for accommodations to meet your families budget and size.
today is for relaxing. Whether you are in an airbnb or a resort - this is a day to soak up the slow pace of Puerto Rico.
Since we live in barbados, we felt ok with not going to an island for the day. we sat an enjoyed the rainforest.

Where to Stay near the SJU Airport
We stayed in an Airbnb right near the airport to make our early morning flight easier. I definitely recommend staying as close to the airport as you can if you have an early morning flight from Puerto Rico.
For large families, there are a few options near the airport that can accommodate 6 people in one room. The Hampton Inn and Suites San Juan offers several room options for big families. As a bonus, they have on-site laundry, a free buffet breakfast, a pool with swim up bar, and cribs available. Another option is the Hotel Villa del Sol which has a family room that can sleep up to 5 guests.
Use the map below to find the best place to stay in San Juan that fits your group size and budget.
